The Rebirth of Sound and Identity through Cindy Lee

Music has always been transformative in its delivery, messaging, and performance. Acting as a reaction or counteraction to the conformity that it magically eludes. Cindy Lee, an eccentric, lofi-indie pop artist, is a direct embodiment of the outlet performance provides for whimsical sound. The performance of identity can be a reaction or a revolt against heteronormative practices and performances. The revolt to this performed conformity is exemplified through the drag alter ego, Cindy Lee, taken on by Canadian musician Patrick Fegel. Fegel, who uses they/them pronouns, is a Canadian musician and former front of the 2000s rock group, “Women”. Fegel has always used music as an exploration of self that did not fit gendered standards of performance. The indie rock underground perfectly intertwines with the offbeat sound and eccentric performance that is Cindy Lee. This space for eccentric personalities, experimental sound, and the queer community created an opening for artists like Cindy Lee.

The outstanding beehive wig, sparkling cocktail dress, prominent makeup, and a signature red lip emerged as Cindy Lee's ego in the early 2010s, following Fegel’s split from the band “Women”. Crafting Cindy was not just an exploration of a new era of sound for Fegel, but a new method of communication. Fegel does not engage in the press and PR circus that is demanded of artists to platform them to stardom. Instead, they rely on the conviction of their sound and performance to draw in audiences. Rejecting the industry status quo and valuing the production, meaning, and authenticity of their music makes Cindy Lee’s psychedelic sound that much more intriguing. Counter culture is what these kinds of artists survive on, the community of individuals who value sound, performance, and true artistic expression.

In the prelude to their most recent album, Diamond Jubilee, in 2024, Fegel’s 7th solo album, their campaign was striking in the total absence of one. The rejection of the typical industry standard is furthered in the intentionally limited access to the whimsical and psychedelic sounds. Their music is only available for purchase on Bandcamp, which prioritizes artists' earnings over audience awareness. Delicacy is what Cindy’s sound shouts, the kind of art that finds you. Cindy Lee is a beautiful blip of discovery; they come to you, you do not seek them out. It is that mysterious relationship with conformity and standard that makes this drag alter ego so intoxicating.

Without the counterculture and community that queerness and music together create is something unique to the exotic underground. The experience of finding these independent and nonconformist artists is an art in itself. Fegel’s drag alter ego not only demonstrates the kind of artists and performances that resonate with subculture, but also a sign of changing times in music, societal ideals surrounding gender and identity, and the furthered acceptance of fluidity.
