Water is Life, Life is Fluid

The concept of water is captivating and mystifying, demanding an explanation for its nature that cannot be delivered. The sea is notoriously untamed- undomesticated. Its power never lacks recognition, especially in timeless tales of travel that bleed into contemporary fishermen’s respect for the sea.

There’s a gender analysis in there. The sea has always been a woman. Beautiful, powerful, unrelenting and looked at with astonishing respect. Biblically, life was created alongside water. Water is life, and women give life. This theme is present in space exploration, how the key ingredient for our survival on other plants is water, and also in birth – how babies are born in water in utero. “Mother nature,” or just women in nature, are able to freely live their qualities and conditions. It’s when viewers started looking at them as women, and saw the empowerment of domesticity, that women and water became separated, with water having more freedom than women.

The fluidity and vastness of water, however – its unexplored and ever changing nature – shapes our  understanding of water. Water can come in so many different forms: a lake, rain, sipped out of stanley cup or in the violence of the sea. The fluidity and inability to constrain or conquer water allows it to be free of accountability for its actions. Rather, the power of the ocean is respected and adored by man. Another key separation from women and water; water is unforgiving, yet women are to forgive.

The aspect of water that we know is what we’ve experienced. Swimming has the rare ability to transport you to another worldly experience, while remaining on earth. That’s why the concept of a polar plunge is so appealing and productive. For just one moment you can transport to another world. Be refreshed, reborn. In a polar plunge, your body's system is shocked. But, after a few moments, your body reaches a level of calmness. You’re at peace. You feel your heart beating and every inch of your skin.

Finally, an interesting side of water is its lasting impression and tangible power. Waves crash against the shore, eroding, moving, smoothing or depositing. Strong boulders become mere accessories to the waves through sand, and strong trees are transformed into driftwood, constantly moving with the schedule and wishes of the waves. As the waves return to the shore, there's a rhythmic unpredictability that gives comfort to nature. Nature has learned to accept the power of the ocean. It has learned o let it run its course and find peace along that plath, as we’ve humbly come to understand our position in the grand power of water.
